Why is it important to recycle the organic fraction?

For environmental reasons:

  • Saving resources by transforming organic matter into compost and improving soil quality
  • Reduction of biodegradable waste in controlled deposits and incineration plants
  • Reduction of the emission of gases involved in the greenhouse effect

For legal and economic reasons:

  • The EU Landfill Directive obliges Member States to reduce the percentage of biodegradable municipal waste destined for landfill (D.1999 / 31 / EC). Specifically, in 2015 the disposal of biodegradable waste in landfills should be reduced to 65%.
  • L.9 / 2008 modifying L 6/93 obliges all municipalities to make selective collection and not just those with 5,000 inhabitants.
  • For this, economic instruments have been established such as the canon on the disposal of waste. This tribute punishes in 12 euros, the tons destined to landfill. This money is returned to those entities that make a better selective collection of the FORM. Likewise, those municipalities that have not started the collection service are also punished.

What is the organic fraction? What is done?

What is it?

The organic fraction are:

  • remains of fruit and vegetables
  • remains and offal of meat and fish
  • dry bread and poorly cooked food
  • egg shells, nuts and shellfish
  • kitchen paper and napkins soiled with food
  • corks, coffee grounds and leftover infusions
  • vegetable remains in small quantities (litter, flowers, withered bouquets ...)

Let's do it right!

It is very important that in the container of the organic fraction we do not throw inorganic waste (plastics, glasses, medicines ...), since these negatively affect the process of transformation of organic matter into compost and decrease the final quality . Although we can think that the containers that have contained food go to the brown container, these are inorganic and we will NEVER throw them together with the food remains, but they will go to the yellow container of the light containers. To see the quality of your municipality you can enter the following address of the Catalan Waste Agency: https://sdr.arc.cat/sdr/ListCaracteritzacions.do

Although it is not mandatory, it is highly recommended to use compostable bags at home to separate the organic fraction, since they are made of a material that can become part of the composting process without reducing the quality of the final compound.

Where do we take it?

The organic fraction that is collected from the street containers is taken to the Mas de Barberans composting plant to transform it into a compound.

And what do we get?

It must be borne in mind that for every 100kg of organic fraction collected in the containers, 20kg of compound can be obtained! If we take into account that, on average, each citizen generates about 3kg of organic fraction a week, imagine the organic marinade that we can get at the end of the year together !!!

Baix Ebre

Collection service

The organic fraction is collected with 3m3 underground containers and 1.8m3 surface containers, which are emptied by high-capacity state-of-the-art trucks that allow only one driver to go. In the region there are a total of 387 containers of organic fraction, between underground and surface, which serve all municipalities, therefore there is 1 container for every 210 inhabitants.

The collection is done during the day, on different days a week. In addition, the Rebé has a truck that cleans the containers inside and out, both those on the surface and underground; in winter cleaning is done once a month, and in summer once a week.

The organic fraction that is collected from the underground containers is taken to the Mas de Barberans composting plant to follow the composting process.

Montsià

Collection service

The collection of the organic fraction is carried out with 3m3 underground metal containers that are emptied by large capacity trucks and by collection teams made up of a driver and a laborer. In the region there are a total of 225 underground containers of organic fraction that serve all municipalities, therefore there is 1 container for every 321 inhabitants.

The collection is done at night, except in the municipalities of Freginals, Godall, La Galera, Mas de Barberans, Masdenverge and Santa Bárbara (where it is done in the morning), and on different days of the week.
