In the area of the Fonts del Ullals this ditch is born, which runs for about 5 km until it reaches a pond located in the upper part of the town. Once this pool has passed, the canal continues and forks into different branches that carry the water through the entire Xerta orchard.
The strong current that this ditch presents and the fact that it carries water almost all year round (it is only dried for maintenance tasks) make this infrastructure an ideal place for the development of black fly larvae, at least in the part above it, since from the bifurcations, already at the height of Xerta, the water, for irrigation reasons, is not constant, which favors the control tasks.
Sampling: sampling is done by brushing the bottom of the ditch to help detach any larvae that may be attached. For this purpose, a brush and a net with a 500 micron mesh are available, with which the larvae are collected. The sediment that is collected with the mesh is placed in a basin with water and the larvae that have been collected are counted. Depending on the larvae that appear and their stage of development, a treatment is decided.
Control: it is carried out manually by applying Bti with the help of a backpack where the product is mixed with the necessary water to obtain an adequate concentration of product and a volume of the mixture that allows us to apply the product for a certain time .
